Principle 4. - Believe it is Possible

A boyfriend once told me that when he was little, he was sure that if a piece of debris was to fall from the sky, it was destined to fall on his head.  He just knew that the universe was out to get him. For him, life was a series of trials and mishaps that had to be endured and if there was sometimes happiness, there was also another problem headed his way.  More...

My outlook has never been as bad as that but I have got to admit that believing that I, Jeanne Russell, can have anything I truly want is sometimes hard to do. I mean life just keeps on throwing it at us. Even Jack Canfield says that one thing we can count on when we decide what we really want is that a road block will almost immediately appear in the way.

According to The Success Principles by Jack Canfield and Janet Switzer, one of the principles necessary to achieve is the belief that success is possible.  That may sound obvious, but how many of us actually believe it? The ones who get it, that’s who.  So how do the rest of us do it? How do we make ourselves believe that we can have it all?

I guess we have to talk ourselves into it.  We have to keep on saying it and dreaming it and wanting it until we finally believe it.

We have to think back to back when we were kids and we wished and wished and wished and willed our parents to give us that cool blue bike with the white banana seat and yellow trim.  As children, we knew the value of wishing.  We knew that if we wished and prayed we could make the universe bend to our will.

So what happened?  There are a thousand sayings such as “wishing won’t make it so..” that we are taught as children to help us to live in the real world.  Experience teaches us that wishing is not always enough.  That is true; but backed by planning and action wishing can make our dreams come true. In fact it is a necessary ingredient.  We must see it before we can achieve it.

So those stupid affirmations that they make fun of on Saturday Night Live are actually valuable.  See it, say it, write it down, and make it happen.  That’s the plan.
