Supplements for Blood Sugar Control

There is all sorts of research out there on what vitamins and herbs help with blood glucose control. I was was frankly overwhelmed with all the choices when I first started my research. I am always modifying my regimen and will share what I am taking and doing on this web-site. As I get better informed, so will you.

Cinnamon - Cinnamon has certain ingredients that make cells more sensitive to insulin.  In type II diabetes, a person usually has insulin, they’re just are not using it correctly. Cinnamon helps with that.  I put a big spoonful of cinnamon in my coffee each morning.  I also add it to other foods whenever possible. It tastes great and also tastes kind of sweet.  You know I like that!

Vitamin C - I take one big 500 mg dose of vitamin C each morning. I’ve read that Vitamin C helps protect against nerve damage, blindness, and heart disease in a diabetic.  You can take up to 2,000 mg of vitamin C each day but more than that can be very dangerous and harmful. The dose I take is 833% of the daily recommended dosage for a normal person.  I think that is quite enough.  If I am sick, I take 2.

Chromium Picolinate - I take 200 mcg twice a day. A lot of diabetics have a Chromium deficiency.  They think Chromium helps reduce blood sugar.  I have definitely noticed an improvement since I have been taking it.

Calcium, Magnesium with Zinc - I take one tablet 3 times a day. Magnesium is recommended at about 350 mg a day.  They can’t decide if low magnesium  is a cause of result of diabetes but most diabetics are deficients in this mineral.  It helps improve insulin resistence and blood sugar control.

Dandelion - I just started taking this. Dandelion helps stabilize blood sugar. I have a friend, Suzanne Mills, who is a health coach. She was kind enough to make a Dandelion root tincture for me.  It tastes terrible but I have found that if I put it in a strong herb tea with added orange zest, it tastes ok.  You can buy this in a pill form or as a tincture.  The dose for the pill is 2 500 mg capsules of dried dandelion root 3 times a day.

I also take Glucosamine and Chondroitin for arthritis.  They really help but you have to take them for a month before you start to feel the results.

There are so many other things out there that help.
