Do Self Help Books Really Work?
Right now there are countless books, seminars, and audio tapes telling us how to get the most out of our lives, how to get rich, how to make our dreams come true. This is nothing new. Heck Napolean Hill wrote Think and Grow Rich in 1937!
Have you ever wondered if all the people selling self-help products have made their millions by selling you and I a bill of goods? I mean why aren’t we all rich?
Don’t get me wrong, I have been an avid reader of self-help books for several years. In fact, it was Barbara Winter, author of Making a Living Without a Job, who inspired me to quit my job, move to the Shenandoah Valley, and start a new life living and working without a job.
It has been 5 years and I have made progress. I am making it financially (finally), I have lost 20 Lbs (still have a ways to go), I have not found love but have started to look around, and I have a better idea of what I want. But... I have a long way to go. Now I renew my commitment to using all the self help tools available to me.
I know I am responsible for where I am. I have partially embraced the ideas espoused by the likes of Tony Robbins, Jack Canfield, and Zig Zigler but I have not fully committed to taking the actions necessary for success.
ALL THAT CHANGES TODAY!
This web-site is an experiment in Self-improvement. Here I am documenting my efforts, setbacks, and successes using all the resources available to me. I have been doing it on and off for several years now. Lately I have been lax in documenting my progress but I continue to explore new areas of self help all the time.
Can a regular person change their life by listening to today’s Self Improvement sages? We’ll see... So far I am making progress but the jury is still out. If I used the tools daily as suggested by Jack and Tony, I would be further along but I am just a regular person whose progress comes in fits and starts. But I never give up, never surrender, and I think that is what makes my eventual success assured.
I am a willing guinea pig. Starting Feb 26, 2005, I am renewing my commitment on March 31, 2008!
Check out my personal inventory to get an idea of where I am starting from and how far I have come.. If I can transform my life. So can you!
I will be using Jack Canfield’s book, The Success Principles, as a basic guide but will pull from all sources available to me.
My plan was that by this year I would have a book - either an account of how I achieved success by following the advice of the Success Sages or and account of why I think it is all bunk! A year has passed and I am not there yet but I have also not thrown in the towel.
You can follow my progress, send me advice (and/or flowers), and hopefully witness a real change.
As I go I may find out some things that work and things that don’t in my Success Journey newsletter. I will share insights, recipes, and useful tips but only after I have tried them out and only if they work!
Wish me luck!!!
Sincerely,

Over the weekend, I received two e-mails from individuals who were on similar journeys who reached out and shared part of their stories with me. It meant so much and inspired me to renew my efforts in self-development. People are so generous and kind! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
